On the 14th of June of 2008, the city celebrated 850 years.
It was in fact an edict of Federico Barbarossa, signed on the 15th June 1158, that established the foundation of Munich as a city, acknowledging the right to coin money and to host a market inside the walls.
Even if the date of 15th June is symbolic and representative of the prestige granted to the city, with the right to coin money and arrange a market, the history of Munich is much older, dating back to when Henry the Lion ordered the construction of a bridge on the salt road , close to the village called Munichen, with the purpose to collect duties for the passage.
Every year the city wears its feast dress to celebrate this recurrence.
