Englischer Garten - Munich

El The English garden is one of the largest public parks of the world, just a little smaller than the Phoenix Park in Dublin and Central Park in New York. It stretches from the city centre until the North-East border, on a total surface of 3.7 square kilometres! Englischer Garten
The garden was designed by the War Ministry Benjamin Thompson, an officer of American origin. The original project was intended for the militaries, both as a recreational area and a place where they could better their knowledge of the agricultural field. But later, toward the beginning of the 19th century, the park became the first public garden of Germany, with wide green areas and small lakes and rivers, which made it the most beloved place for the inhabitants of Munich.
Still today, during summer season it is possible to sunbathe, dressed or naked, take a bath, walk, go bicycling and even try a surfing experience near the small waterfall of PrinzregentenstraBe, while in winter it is possible to make pleasant walks under the snow or to go ice-skating. Not to miss are: the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese tower), a big wooden pagoda 25 metres high, which hosts inside a big restaurant and pub; the Monopteros, a temple in Greek style designed by the architect Leo von Klenze in1836, and a small Japanese house of tea, the Japanische Teehaus, a gift from Japan in occasion of the Olympic Games of 1972.
