Peterskirche is the oldest church of the city, being part of the monastery that gave its name to Munich.
It was built in 1158 according to the will of Ottone the 1st , but, between 1278 and 1294, it was replaced by a gothic church, and during the 14th century the bell-towers were replaced with only one central element. Later, the church was restored in baroque style, and reshaped according to the rococo touch. Inside the church is the beautiful Altar, inspired by the Bernini’s altar in Saint Peter.
The crown is removable, in fact it is taken off every time a Pope dies, and it is put back on its place soon after the election of the new Pope, following a solemn ceremony. The bell-tower, also called Alter Peter (the Old Peter), includes 8 clocks and seven bells, and from the top you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city and its surroundings.
